It was 5th grade.

Gym class to be precise.

My heart sank.

Why?

Because I knew I would have to take my shirt off again.

That meant I knew I would be embarrassed again.

And I knew I would be laughed at yet again.

This was my locker room reality for years on repeat.

Every week, without fail.

Yes, I was "that" kid.

The one classmates all laughed at.

(They certainly aren't laughing now)

Back then I was overweight, out of shape and dissatisfied with how I looked in the mirror.

I was sick and tired of seeing that pesky spare tire strapped to my belly.

Everywhere I went, it followed.

Ever since I can remember, I've always tried to shed the extra pounds of padding I carried around.

And every time I failed.

"Is this the way it's always going to be?" I thought.

It seemed so.

That is, until I discovered the truth about fat loss and why so many people fail to achieve it.

Maybe you think I was blessed with perfect genetics and always looked the way I do now?

You would be wrong.

If you don't believe me, see for yourself:

I don't blame you if initially you didn't believe me.

To be honest, I probably wouldn't have either a few years ago.

If you would've shown me what I looked like now...

I would have said "You're out of your damn mind!"

However, a lot has changed since then.

Thinking back, I was desperate to get to the bottom of why I couldn't lose fat and others so easily could.

My mind was filled with so many lies and falsehoods I'm surprised it didn't burst at the seams.

I came up with an endless number of beliefs as to why I was struggling to lose weight:

"I've Got 'Fat' Genetics!"

This made me think I'd always be fat.

"What's the use if my genetics have built me this way?" I thought.

In fact, it almost made me stop trying at one point.

Thank the stars I never did or else I wouldn't be writing this to you.

I discovered this wasn't true thanks to my family. I looked around at the dinner table and everyone was a normal body weight.

It was I who was the odd one out. I was the only overweight person at the table.

If it was my genetics holding me back, surely my whole family would be fat too?

This was a huge eye opener and the first "ahh ha" moment of many.

"I'm an Endomorph!"

My gym teacher gave me this one. "Endomorphs struggle to lose fat and are naturally stocky," is what he told me.

For a while I embraced the endomorph life."Because I'm 'naturally' this way, I may as well keep eating how I usually eat," was my thought process.

This led me to gain even more weight and pack on the pounds.

Then I saw other "endomorphs" lose fat and get into incredible shape with my own two eyes.

This made me question my beliefs and my gym teachers too.

After some digging I discovered I was right. There is no such thing as an "endomorph" after all.

One more lie was lifted from my shoulders!

"I Must Have a Slow Metabolism!"

For years I believed my metabolism was slower than everyone else's.

If most people's was an Italian supercar, mine was an old, beat up Ford. And no matter how hard I put my foot on the gas, I was never going to be able to drive as fast.

There was nothing I could do to fix this and no mechanic could help me (or so I thought). This belief led me down the wrong path yet again.

As others lost weight, I sat on the sidelines and watched. When I did join in, I thought countless hours of cardio was the answer.

How wrong I was...

It's only when I stopped doing tons of cardio and started applying the principles of fitness that I began to see results.

"I'm Eating a Diet out of Sync with My Blood Type!"

OK, I never actually believed this one but it's an example of some of the BS out there.

The frustration stayed with me throughout my childhood and teenage years.

Thankfully, I channelled those fat kid jokes into fuel for my quest to achieve the body of my dreams.

The picture started becoming clearer and clearer.

I took my quest to the physical world too.

Any fitness pro I could get my hands on was interrogated.

I was once blind but now I could see.

This started to show on the mirror and the scales as well.

Veins I never knew existed began to show.

My abs started to finally rear their head.

What started out as a trickle, grew into a flood.

This was surreal coming from someone used to mockery.

After years of painstaking trial and error, I can safely say I'm almost there...
